Gloria:
You didn't say if this house is in a designated Historic District, and
whether or not your building inspector has checked it out. If the answer
is no, and no, you might start by discussing your concerns with the
owner and perhaps he might be persuaded to refurbish the home, rather
than demolish it. It's a long shot of course, but worth a try.
I do hope it sits within a local Historic District, as the Commission
will have final say after listening to any proposal the owner has. It's
always hard to see a lovely old home fall into such hard times. Good luck!

Ive been told that once mold gets into the beams, its impossible to get out. Of course, the owner, who is one of the Towns largest developers, wants to tear it down, and, since it is on almost three acres in a Residential 60 (60,000 square feet) district, it could be replaced with more than one trendy reproduction, which will destroy the historic character of the neighborhood. The house is subject to a one year demolition delay.
