I¹ve got so many leads, and they are all intersecting in some fascinating
ways.

Late-breaking news comes from one of the remaining Shakers at Sabbathday
Lake, who found an old photograph in which the markers were dark‹almost
black, rather than the current white. Then a later photo from the 1940s
shows them as white.

This lends credence to the theory that the cast iron was oiled at first,
rather than painted.
