The NH Division of Historical Resources in Concord, New Hampshire, has an opening for a Historian position # 41308 (Labor Grade 24); the salary range is $39,234.00-$53,059.00.
The Historian/State Survey Coordinator supports the work of the Division of Historical Resources by coordinating and administering the Division's program to survey and inventory all historic buildings, structures and sites, and to create and maintain a statewide filing system for these properties.
Duties include: Administering all aspects of the statewide Survey and Inventory Program including the NH State Register of Historic Places, NH Historic Property Documentation Program and HABS/HAER/HALS, NH Barn Survey, Historic Properties Database, and State Historic Context List. Keeping of the state's record of historical properties, in both paper and digital formats, including setting policy and establishing standards and guidelines for use and preservation. Preparing and revising, as needed, the state survey manual and inventory forms. Chair the Determination of Eligibility (DOE) Committee, including formulating policy, guidance and procedures, and tracking properties moving through the DOE process. Developing determinations of eligibility and evaluates survey reports, inventory forms, and other products submitted for review by the DOE Committee. Providing technical assistance to individuals, communities, planning commissions, government agencies, and non-profit organizations in their efforts to identify, evaluate and record historic properties. Integrating survey programs and records into all other Division program areas, including the Certified Local Government, Easement, and Review and Compliance programs. Supervising and evaluating the work products of consultants working in these programs. Assisting the Director and professional staff in preparing and revising the statewide historic preservation plan and annual reports. Performing research, giving talks, and writing articles relating to the statewide survey program. Supervises summer interns and special projects contractors; shared supervisory duties for the cultural resources records coordinator. Coordinates the Division's responsibilities relating to the State Highway Historical Markers Program.
Education: Master's degree from a recognized college or university with major study in history, architectural history, architecture, anthropology, historic preservation, preservation studies, or closely related field.
Experience: Five years' experience related to the work required by the position. Experience working with or in a state historic preservation office is desirable.
Special Qualifications: Experience in communicating and working with the public is essential.
License/Certification: Approval by cognizant federal agency (NPS) contingent upon satisfaction of the requirements of USC 36 CFR 61.
