Historic New England presents An Introduction to New England
Architecture: Technology and Tradition on Tuesday or Thursday evenings
in October. Tuesday sessions are held at the Lyman Estate in Waltham,
Massachusetts. Thursday sessions are held at the Governor John Langdon
House in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. All sessions begin at 6 p.m.
This five-week course tells the story of New England architecture from
1640 to 1940. Historic New England staff explore building traditions,
available technology, and how lifestyles affected the houses of
generations of New Englanders. Using high-style and vernacular examples
from across the region, Senior Stewardship Manager Joseph Cornish and
Preservation Specialist Sally Zimmerman trace changes in construction,
style, and function in residential architecture in a series of lectures
that culminates in a hands-on tour of a Historic New England property
that will help you learn to read your old house.
