The Newton History Museum is looking for examples of Requests for  
Qualifications that Mass. municipalities have used when soliciting 
proposals from conservation firms to write specifications and design 
contracts for work related to the  repair and conservation of tombs in 
historic municipal burying grounds.  

Approx. 30 tombs (mound/ vault and basal) have been identified as 
needing conservation and/or repair treatment in two of the three sites.  
A  set of recommendations and scope of work was updated in 2003.  
Minimum qualifications  would include structural engineering as well as 
historic masonry experience.  

Working with the City of Newton's Parks and Recreation Dept., the 
Museum was  granted CPA  funding in 2004 to undertake a large-scale 
conservation project in the  city's three historic burying grounds.  To 
date, the project has involved a complete conditions assessment, 
stabilization of the grounds, removal of dead trees and  volunteer 
growth, and conservation of approx. 260 gravestones.
