The Newton History Museum is looking for examples of Requests for
Qualifications that Mass. municipalities have used when soliciting
proposals from conservation firms to write specifications and design
contracts for work related to the repair and conservation of tombs in
historic municipal burying grounds.

Approx. 30 tombs (mound/ vault and basal) have been identified as
needing conservation and/or repair treatment in two of the three sites.
A set of recommendations and scope of work was updated in 2003.
Minimum qualifications would include structural engineering as well as
historic masonry experience.

Working with the City of Newton's Parks and Recreation Dept., the
Museum was granted CPA funding in 2004 to undertake a large-scale
conservation project in the city's three historic burying grounds. To
date, the project has involved a complete conditions assessment,
stabilization of the grounds, removal of dead trees and volunteer
growth, and conservation of approx. 260 gravestones.

More information on the overall project can be found at:

If you have any information or insight to share about RFQs, please
contact NHM's project manager:

Bettina M. Urcuioli

or send a response to the listserv.

We'd be very grateful for your help!
