Dear Preservationists:

Please respond to this threat. I'll attach the flyer, but if it doesn't come
through,
you can write me for the PDF attachment, or contact Jay or Chris directly.

Tim Orwig, Preservation Chair
New England Chapter, Society of Architectural Historians
****************************************************

We are writing to you because of your commitment to architecture,
architectural history, and historic preservation.

As the attached flyer describes in more detail, the 19th century Ames
Shovel Shop complex in North Easton, MA, adjacent to three H.H.
Richardson national landmarks -- the Old Colony Railroad Station, the
Oliver Ames Free Library, and the Oakes Memorial Hall -- is threatened
with demolition. A proposed redevelopment of the site would destroy or
radically alter four of the six largest buildings in the complex and
replace them with insensitive and out-of-scale new construction.

On behalf of a North Easton citizens group, we are trying to alert the
professional community, so that they can express their concerns to
local and state regulators who will be reviewing this project. Our
ultimate goal is to identify a viable alternative approach to
redevelopment of the Shovel Shop complex that will preserve its
historic character.

Time is of the essence; if you want to help, letters of support should
be submitted by October 1 - see the flyer for more details. Also, feel
free to circulate our flyer to others who you think may be interested.

Thank you in advance for your help, and please let us know if you
would like to receive updates on our efforts. If we don't hear from
you, we will remove your name from any future distributions.

Sincerely,

Jay Wickersham FAIA, Esq.
