[MassHistPres] Fwd: 2 great iPhotos showing back of stone barn

Betty,
I don't agree with the "poured in a form" comment below. Looks like mortared
fieldstone, then hand parged. Not far away from your barn in Dartmouth (480
Rock O'Dundee Rd) is a stone house, also very uncommon to area, see attached
pics. The front is more refined with large split stone, but the end wall
picture shows them to be of field and rubble stone similar to your barn.
Note the shallow box eave - perhaps the barn had similar - and lack of
overhang on the rakes. The date of the house is uncertain; c.1750 and c.1840
have been assigned to it. "R. Lapham" lived in the house in 1856 according
to map. When stone buildings are found where they don't "belong" the usual
theories are that the property owner was a mason, immigrated from a place
with stone buildings, suffered a loss from fire, or possessed an uncommon
abundance of stone (field or quarry) on property or nearby.
Good luck,
Rich Casella
Portsmouth, RI

hmm, i can't answer your question with any real knowledge, but the stone
looks almost like aggregate in concrete that was poured in a form...not your
typical stone building...any info on the mason? also, what happened with
the roof overhang?!
very interesting building ....

These are photos of a barn made from stone. I am wondering if this is
unusual in Massachusetts. We don't know the date of the barn yet.
