The design documents that Dennis De Witt mentioned are available on-line.
Mass. Highway Department's Project Development and Design Guide:
http://www.mhd.state.ma.us/default.asp?pgid=content/designGuide&sid=about
Chapter
13, Landscape and Aesthetics, has the most to say about historical
resources.
Federal Highway Administration's MUTCD [Manual of Uniform Traffic Control
Devices]:http://mutcd.fhwa.dot.gov/ The pdf of the "2003 Edition with
Revisions Number 1 and 2 Incorporated, dated December 2007" is the most
current version.
Traffic safety is an evolving science. Within the latest generation of
research there are advocates for fewer signs or even none, requiring all
users (drivers, pedestrians, cyclists) to be actively aware of each other
and of the road to foster a safe and civil street.
