NEWS AT THE MASSACHUSETTS HISTORICAL COMMISSION
SURVEY AND PLANNING GRANTS
In December, forty-eight pre-applications were received by the
Massachusetts Historical Commission for funding under the annual Survey
and Planning Grant Program. These included eleven projects from
Certified Local Governments with the remainder from non-CLG communities.
The total request for funding was $683,200, an indication of the
continued need for support of preservation planning activities
statewide. The Commission will invite full applications at its January
meeting. Award decisions will be made in April. Consistent with
projects in prior years, these pre-applications were largely for
historic property survey and national register nominations. While
funding requests were far greater than funding available, MHC expects to
award projects to both CLGs and non-CLGs.
STATE REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES 2008
The State Register of Historic Places 2008 will soon be mailed to all
local historical commissions and historic district commissions in
Massachusetts. The State Register of Historic Places was established in
1982 as a comprehensive listing of the buildings, structures, objects
and sites that have received local, state or national designations based
on their historic or archaeological significance. The 2008 edition
includes designations through December 31, 2008. Since its
establishment, the State Register has grown to include listings for over
60,000 properties in more than 320 cities and towns. The State Register
is an important historic preservation planning reference tool. It alerts
property owners, planners and project proponents to the presence of
significant historic properties and sites.
NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES
