[MassHistPres] Fwd: basket ball hoops or other sports equipment in historic districts

Since we are nearing the gloaming on a Friday afternoon, I agree with
Brian about the need to avoid becoming the Taste Police in the name of
historic preservation.

But one way to avoid such over-reaching might be to over-reach on
purpose. Use a fluted steel 'period' light pole, painted glossy black,
as the stanchion. Paint the backboard in muted tasteful colors,
displaying the logo and name of the district. Use black nylon for the
net. Only the bright orange rim would be visible to shooters, glowing
like a leering jack o' lantern in the tasteful dim. Every historic
district would want one.

I think that those of us who have authority over changes to private
property need to temper our actions on occasion. I have seen concern
over lawn ornaments in local historic districts. Does a pink flamingo
really need a certificate of appropriateness, what about a faux well, or
one of those fake ducks that the wings spin in the wind? Where we draw
the line may be different for each community, but I worry sometimes
about the ramifications of being too strick. Is it really a
preservation concern or do we just want to tell people what their
property should look like? Something to consider.

I'm having a hard time understanding what the concern would be
with a basketball hoop located in your local historic district. Can you
elaborate on the specifics here. Chris

across this kind of request? If so, what measures were taken in
response?
