A significant collection of historic trees is being documented on the UMass Amherst campus. The UMass Amherst Physical Plant is supervising a contract to inventory all "Memorial Trees, Class Trees, Champion Trees, and Heritage Trees" on the campus. These include specimens imported from the Japan in the 1800's, some of which were the first planted in the United States. Others are specimens added to the Waugh Arboretum by faculty members and some are memorials to persons or events.
Each tree is being located by GPS and recorded on a digital GIS map. There is a web site that is being populated with data on their origin, significance, location on the campus, scientific nomenclature, and photographs. You can see it by starting at the index page at:

The Project Supervisor is: Pamela Monn, Asst. Dir. Buildings and Grounds, psmonn at facil.umass.edu
She is interested in receiving any information from persons familiar with the campus who have information to contribute. In as much as this project includes trees of historic significance, it complements the on-going inventory of historic structures on the campus.
