This e-newsletter from the Massachusetts Historical Commission
Preservation Planning Division has been prepared for local historical
commissions, historic district commissions and others interested in
historic preservation activities around the Commonwealth of
Massachusetts. It is published roughly every other week. If you have

MAY IS NATIONAL PRESERVATION MONTH
The Commonwealth Museum has reopened with its new permanent exhibit at
the Massachusetts Archives Building. The exhibit traces the
Massachusetts experience through the colonial, revolutionary, federal,
and nineteenth century reform periods. For more information visit,

Local events for National Preservation Month include the following:
CAMBRIDGE
On May 21, Cambridge Historical Commission will have a preservation
recognition program to celebrate outstanding efforts to preserve
Cambridge's historic character and built environment.
The seven project categories eligible for Cambridge Preservation Awards
are restoration, rehabilitation, adaptive use, neighborhood
conservation, landscape preservation, archaeology, and
education/outreach.
MARSHFIELD
On May 31, Marshfield YesterDays will celebrate the history and culture
of the town with many historic properties open to the public.
LOWELL
The eighth annual Doors Open Lowell, May 14-17, provides an insider's
look into the preservation of nearly thirty of Lowell's historic
buildings, many not usually open to the public.
MEDFIELD
On May 24, the Vine Lake Preservation Trust will host a walking tour in
Vine Lake Cemetery.
NANTUCKET
Over 20 events are scheduled in the town of Nantucket during the month
of May. Events include walking tours, lectures, open houses and
exhibits.
NEWTON
The City of Newton will host a lecture on landscape architect Frederick
Law Olmsted and the 27th annual house tour featuring eight homes.
SOMERVILLE
A walking tour of historic homes and sites in the Ball
Square/Powderhouse area of Somerville will take place on Sunday, May
17th.

NEW LOCAL HISTORIC DISTRICT STUDY COMMITTEES
The town of Amherst recently appointed a local historic district study
committee.
SPRING ANNUAL TOWN MEETINGS
CANTON
The town of Canton passed revisions to its demolition delay bylaw
including a provision that all permits and approvals from the zoning
board of appeals, planning board, board of health and conservation
commission must be granted before a demolition permit can be issued.
MENDON
A demolition delay bylaw was successfully passed in Mendon at their town
meeting held May 1.
