Historic New England "Ask the Experts – Old House Clinic"
New Kitchens in Old Spaces
Saturday, May 30, 8:30 AM – 12 PM
Phillips House, 34 Chestnut Street, Salem, Mass.
Kitchens pose particular issues for the owner of an old or historic
home: how do you fit a functional modern kitchen into a historic space?
Learn how kitchens have changed over time, what practical design tips
can be borrowed from historic kitchens, and what to watch out for in
bringing historic kitchen spaces into the twenty-first century.
Historic New England staff Jennifer Pustz, museum historian, Daniel
Aulenti, stewardship manager, and Sally Zimmerman, preservation
specialist, will share the history of kitchen design and how people
worked in historic kitchens, and provide practical experiences with
fitting kitchens into historic spaces and preserving authentic kitchen
spaces. Homeowner Roseann Ferrini will speak about her experience
restoring the kitchen in her 1930s bungalow.
Bring your questions about fitting new kitchens into old spaces and get
feedback from the historic kitchen “experts.”
The Phillips House will be open for tours following the program.
