The eighth annual Doors Open Lowell, presented as part of Lowell's National Preservation Month activities, takes place this weekend May 14-17, 2009. The event offers an insider's look into the preservation nearly thirty of Lowell's fabulous historic buildings, many not normally open to the public. It's a celebration of urban living and culture where people and preservation have made Lowell a creative and exciting place to live, work, and visit. In 2002, Lowell was the first city in the United States to launch this prestigious event dedicated to built heritage, architecture, and design.
Look for old favorites this year as well as exciting new additions to the roster of participating buildings. Don't miss Doors Open XTRAs where you can enhance your Doors Open experience through interaction with design professionals and other special activities.
The event kicks off the evening of Thursday May 14 where you can join the City of Lowell and Lowell National Historical Park in recognizing recipients of cultural heritage and historic preservation awards followed by a "progressive dinner" where you can dine at restaurants throughout historic downtown Lowell, take in live music, and stop by special 15-minute heritage talks at select locations. RSVPs for the reception should be made to (978) 275-1700 while more information on the "progressive dinner" can be found at www.cultureiscool.org.
Buildings will be open Friday May 15 (6-9 pm) and Saturday May 16 (11am - 6pm) while on Sunday May 17 (10am-5pm), the public can get a "sneak peek" at the American Textile History Museum's new exhibits as they prepare for their grand reopening.
Check the event's website www.doorsopenlowell.org for full event information and regular updates. Program guide will also be available at the Lowell National Historical Park Visitor Center in Market Mills at 246 Market Street throughout the event.
Doors Open Lowell is presented by the Lowell Historic Board, Lowell National Historical Park, Lowell Heritage Partnership, City of Lowell, Greater Merrimack Valley Convention & Visitors Bureau, and the Cultural Organization of Lowell (COOL).
This project has been funded in part by a grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation's Eastern Massachusetts Preservation Fund.
Event is free. For more information on Doors Open Lowell, call (978) 275-1818.
