The Town of North Attleborough Historical Commission voted against having cell tower communications installed in and on the historic Baptist Church , a landmark on our town common. If anyone wants to take a ride to see it that would be the best education as to what was not promised but done anyway by the project proponents.
We worked with our Zoning Board of Appeals to prevent this unfortunate and intrusive installation, very visible from all sides and the back of the church where the wires are clearly a visual eyesore that no one should have to tolerate. We should have worked more closely with MHC to prevent this rape of an architectural jewel . Unfortunately the church members needed the money and were saying the church was not "historic" enough. Unfortunately money still has a lot to do with what eventually happens.
As proactive as the North Attleborough Historical Commission has been since I have been a member going back to 1981, I continue to feel that property owners do not realize the irreplaceable historic and architectural value that their individual properties add to the big picture.
My hope is that technology will change and there will be less conspicuous ways to add the mechanisms that are needed for us to communicate in the media of the times. We should be able to respect the best of the old when trying to add new systems that are needed to live with the technology of the present .
Remembering that we are volunteers who may not have professional skills , we need more direction , we need a louder and more organized voice to engage the public to understand and realize our mission.
Ann J. Chapdelaine , Chairperson
Town of North Attleborough Historical Commisison
