Sudbury has an original Poor Farm, that is privately owned, but surrounding it on a public road is a 19 acre meadow, that was purchased by the Town for a conservation area, with wetlands. Adjacent to the restored Poor Farm is the location of the Tramp House, which is now the unpaved parking lot for the users of the Conservation area. It is called "Poor Farm Meadows Conservation Land".
The Sudbury Poor Farm (privately owned) is normally called the Meachen Farm, as that family has owned it for many decades. It is handsomely restored and preserved leaving as much original material as possible.
We the Sudbury Historical Society did an original program two years ago about the history of the Tramp House, and the Poor Farm with the full cooperation of the present owners who provided musical accompaniment.
I wonder if the Poor Farm in Upton still exists? I went there years ago when Earl Tupper, the founder of Tupper Ware lived there.
Yours, Lee Swanson - Curator

Cambridge's 1850 almshouse still stands on Matignon Avenue near the Arlington line. Designed by Gridley Bryant and Rev. Louis Dwight, it is a clone of Boston's Charles Street jail. The city sold the adjacent poor farm for development in 1926; the almshouse and its outbuildings went to the archdiocese of Boston. The almshouse became an orphanage and then an elementary school; now it is owned by the International School of Boston. Matignon High School occupies the almshouse quarry. A few of the outbuildings are still intact.

Westport has its Poor Farm historic buildings and land still intact and owned by the Town. It is now leased by the Trustees of Reservation.

Are there other Poor Farms in the state with historic buildings and/or land still intact?

  Thank you.

  Betty Slade

  Westport
