The Lexington Historical Commission is pleased to present our new
website, http://historicsurvey.lexingtonma.gov. Funded with CPA funds,
the website provides a scanned version of our nine-volume Survey of
Cultural Resources (the "Inventory"), as well as new descriptions of 46
of the neighborhoods in town and a period-by-period synopsis of
Lexington history -- all illustrated with representative photographs,
maps and other useful information about the development of the Town and
its buildings. The website also contains scans of historic maps of
Lexington, from the earliest -- 1641, hand drawn by Edwin Worthen -- to
1906; many of these maps have owner names, providing an invaluable
resource for dating and researching homes. We've provided a Guide to
Architectural Styles, which points out the defining features of various
building types; and a bibliography of Lexington resources, all of which
are available through Cary Memorial Library. There's also a list of our
National Historic Landmarks and the Lexington properties listed on the
National Register of Historic Places, as well as a catalogue of early
Lexington building plans on file at the Mass. Archives.
We hope you will find the new website an interesting and useful
resource. We are grateful to the citizens of Lexington for their
support of this important project, and we welcome your questions and
comments.
