Kristi,
Attached are three basic snow retention pieces that attach to slate roofs
relatively easily. The pig tails that you mentioned are simply twisted wire
and compress in a relatively short period of time. The snow guard assembly
isn't seen that often in residential applications and is stamped sheet metal
so will hold up a little better than the pig tails. The bronze guards are a
cast bronze piece attached to a piece of copper that has been folded
multiple times.
It is my experience that the last piece, the bronze guard, holds up the best
while protecting the area.
