[MassHistPres] Date Plaques on Historic Houses

Foxborough's Historic House Plaque Program was proposed and initiated 10
years ago with the approval of a majority vote of the Historical Commission
members only. Dates are assigned after a member of the Commission either
verifies a homeowner's research or does the research him/herself. The
maritime-board wooden plaques cost $60.00 (the sign painter's price) and are
of uniform size, color and lettering. There are over 140 of these plaques
now hanging - they are distinctive and attractive.

There are other types of date plaques hung by homeowners with build dates
which are not verified by us but which, up to now, are consistent with the
history we know of those particular houses.

  Re: date plaques--
May I suggest that whoever is sponsoring date plaques use the occasion to
double-check each house history before engraving its "date" in brass. The
expensive date plaques sold to Brewster homeowners a few years ago by the
local Historical Society nearly all "immortalize" incorrect dates, based on
inaccurate material compiled 20 or 30 years ago. This should actually be a
welcome spur to a new round of research.

Can anyone tell me how their town governments have handled approvals
for Date Plaques on Historic Houses?
Our zoning bylaw has stringent guidelines, but date plaques aren't
      really signs.
Did other HC's seek approval from HDC's, Select Boards or Building
      Inspector?
