[MassHistPres] Inventory of Historic and Archaeological Assets of the Commonwealth

1) As Gretchen notes in her separate comment to the list, MHC has
started to link pdfs of scanned inventory forms and jpeg photos from
MHCs files to its online MACRIS database. Work on this has been
supported in part by a competitively awarded Preserve America grant to
MHC from the Department of Interior, National Park Service. These
changes to the MACRIS web site have only been up about a week. We are
working our way alphabetically backwards through the towns, so if your
town is at the front of the alphabet, have patience, we'll get there!
We will be adding material to the site as scanning continues. The site
itself has a number of new links explaining the features we have added,
so have a look at a "W" town! http://www.sec.state.ma.us/mhc/mhcidx.htm
and click on the Search MACRIS Database link at the bottom of the middle
column. We are certainly interested in your feedback and comments.

2) To clarify Anne's comment below, we are encouraging towns who
are scoping survey project contracts with consultants to include a
requirement of electronic submission of inventory forms to accompany the
required hard copy form. And we are requiring this in projects that are
funded with MHC grants. For everyone else we are strongly encouraging
that a CD accompany a hard copy submission, but it's not a requirement.
Any questions should be directed to Peter Stott at MHC.

3) We have also been developing an on-line mapping tool designed
to generate inventory form locus maps using readily available GIS data
(roads, aerial photos, parcel maps where they exist, etc). Though it
has been used for a few survey projects, this tool is not yet in general
release, and is only one of a number of options available to create
accurate locus maps for inventory forms. Again contact Peter Stott at
MHC if you have mapping questions relative to inventory forms.

Jonathan,

Chris Skelly can tell you more, but it's my understanding that there are
no inventory forms for any community online yet, at least through the
state system, but that should be changing soon. MHC guidelines for
current survey and inventory projects now require copies of all forms on
CD-R, accompanied by maps generated through the Mass. GIS system. So
when the funding is available for posting them online, the documents
will be ready as well.

In the meantime, there are a few communities who have made their local
inventory forms accessible on line. Marlborough is one.

Does anybody know how to access this inventory online? I followed the
trail of breadcrumbs through the Mass.gov and MHC websites to no avail.
