[MassHistPres] evidence of patterned slates

There is a mansard which was stripped and recovered with wood shakes in the '60s.  The owner wants to restore the slates and is wondering if they would have been patterned.  Assuming the patterning had to do with slate shapes and not just color, can anyone suggest whether the pattern of nail holes or other evidence is likely to reveal that.
