Preservation Massachusetts Calls for Nominations:
Massachusetts Most Endangered Historic Resources to focus on
tornado impacted communities
***Preservation Massachusetts’ Most Endangered Historic Resources Program
will be a Special Edition for 2011, focusing only on the communities of
Western Massachusetts hit by the damaging June 1st tornadoes and
storms.*For this reason Preservation Massachusetts will only accept
nominations from
the Western Massachusetts areas negatively affected by the storms, including
Agawam, Brimfield, Monson, Springfield, Southbridge, Sturbridge, Westfield,
West Springfield and Wilbraham.
Established in 1993, the Massachusetts' Most Endangered Historic Resources
Program is one of Preservation Massachusetts’ most important preservation
advocacy and education tools. Local groups or individuals who are deeply
concerned about the potential loss of these significant resources, such as
buildings and landscapes, nominate sites from across the state. The list is
one of the first steps in focusing statewide attention on the condition of
these historic resources and their importance to communities, and often
serves as a catalyst for extensive preservation opportunities.
The program operates on a nomination basis and nominations can be made by
individuals, groups or organizations that are concerned about a particular
property, structure or landscape. The nominations are then reviewed by a
committee of over 30 preservation professionals from across the state at a
meeting to be held in mid- September.
Preservation Massachusetts feels strongly that in order to continue our
commitment to the needs of the western Massachusetts constituency, it is
imperative to keep the spotlight on the areas devastated by June’s natural
disaster. The Most Endangered Historic Resources List will be an
opportunity for continued advocacy and education about preservation in these
communities as they begin to rebuild and restore.

*About the Most Endangered Historic Resources Program*
Established in 1993, the Massachusetts' Most Endangered Historic Resources
Program is one of our most important preservation advocacy and education
tools. Local groups or individuals who are deeply concerned about the
potential loss of these significant resources nominate sites from across the
state. The list is one of the first steps in focusing statewide attention on
the condition of these historic resources and their importance to
communities, and often serves as a catalyst for extensive preservation
opportunities.
The Most Endangered list at its core an advocacy and education "PR" program.
Preservation Massachusetts utilizes our statewide visibility, resources and
networks to promote the importance of these resources and work with the
nominators and other involved parties to find a solution to the preservation
challenge. Since the first listing in 1993, less than 20 resources have
been lost, over 40 completely saved and restored and many more progressing
well on the long road back from the brink.
The Most Endangered list is announced each year at Preservation
Massachusetts'
Fall Preservation Event
