Vinyl lettering has become the industry standard and it is virtually indistinguishable from paint.  For those who still prefer to use birch bark flashing around their windows, I wish them well.

I would say that corroded metal plaques are far more disrespectful than tastefully designed and crafted Komacel.  Furthermore, plexiglas covering the corroded metal is in fact a form of plastic composite.

Finally, Historic New England would respectfully disagree with you opinion given that they now acknowledge instances where plastic composites provide a reasonable, and cost effective solution in certain situations where it is no longer practical to use wood.  Thankfully, in my 300 year old home, the three families that have inhabited the same, have overtime taken advantage of technological changes that have helped to preserve it historical significance in the absence of political correctness.
