Try putting a sealant over the entire painted sign once it's finished,
polyurethane maybe.

respect to memorial plaques, not trim on houses or fences. I make
presentations across New England and virtually 100% of the time when I
present a hand-painted signboards versus vinyl lettering, members of
historical commissions cannot tell the difference. The primary difference
of course is that after 5 years the paint begins to peel while the vinyl
lettering still looks fresh.

merely plaques in town parks (not historic landmarks) commemorating
people. In this case, I wouldn't think Azek or Vinyl connotes disrespect
any more than any other material. Of course, any marker (of any material)
can be ugly depending on the design, in which case I'd call it ugly rather
than disrespectful.
