i have written letters to a number of 'green' organizations regarding their advertisements and stories that appear to support the use of (mostly vinyl) replacement windows...it's irresponsible to suggest vinyl is a 'green' choice....some manufacturers refer to their vinyl as high grade 'virgin'...polyvinyl chloride is about as environmentally unfriendly as you can get...it spews dioxins into the atmosphere during manufacture, it cannot be recycled and the superior wood sash that is being replaced is deposited in an overflowing landfill...the double paned glass seal will fail in short order allowing the argon gas that you paid a premium for to escape resulting in the ubiquitous fogged sash...
'green' is a bandwagon term...i'm not taking the ride....never, ever, ever is polyvinyl chloride a 'green' product...
on page 1 of 'going green' there's an article about a couple who 'greenovated' their 19th century home...that involved pretty much gutting the place and replacing the old windows with pella vinyl windows...this couple may have had the best of intentions but were misguided...in the article, there is a quote about pella windows 'they have a decent track record of warranty repairs and after-sale service'...read the warranty on any of the four major manufacturers of replacement windows...they all offer 20 years of limited warranty with repairs being made at their discretion...look closely now, it's actually 10 years for the glass...they will only supply materials and labor WITHIN THE FIRST TWO YEARS if they determine a failure is due to a manufacturing defect...after 2 years, they will supply the part you must supply and pay for the labor...
Rite Windows has replaced about 120,000 window this year---that's a crime and a 180 degree turn away from responsible practices...imagine how much pollution during manufacturer and transportation was expended and imagine 120,000 window piled high at the local landfill...
there's a lot of bunk out there...do your homework....
if you haven't had a chance to watch 'blue vinyl', it's a real eye opener...
