FOCUS ON A COMMUNITY - HADLEY

The western Massachusetts town of Hadley, located in the rich farmland
of the Connecticut River Valley, has an agricultural past and present.
For successive generations, Hadley families have been very active in
placing Agricultural Preservation Restrictions on their farmland as a
means of keeping it in agricultural use. With more than 2,400 acres
committed, Hadley has preserved more land than any other community in
the program. Maintaining this agricultural heritage into the future is
a principal task of the Hadley Historical Commission. In 2009, as part
of the celebration of the 350th anniversary of the founding of Hadley,
the Hadley Historical Commission launched a survey of the town's barns
and farm landscapes. Drawing on Community Preservation Act funds, the
commission, with the assistance of a professional preservation
consultant, documented over one hundred structures on a wide range of
farms. During the year, local farmers joined the commission and the
consultant on two bus tours around town sharing their knowledge in a
traveling oral history project that could then be incorporated into the
barn documentation. The project identified two of the principal
builders of tobacco barns active in Hadley in the 1930s, clarified the
changing uses of barns over time and provided unrecorded family farming
history for the project. The results of the barn survey have been
presented in a lecture and will soon be available on a website and in a
book of photos. Do you have a project you'd like to share with the
local commissions around the Commonwealth? Email your ideas to
