[MassHistPres] Conservators for monumental restoration

It's Friday. Do you really want to start a philosophical discussion about the value of memorializing those who have fallen or participated in war?

Public memorials serve the purposes of all of the members of the public, which holds a full range of opinions in the matter. If it makes you feel better, you can consider war memorials to serve the same purpose as Holocaust memorials-to keep us from ever forgetting. The greatest error we can make is in trying to erase from our presence the memory of all the things we have done-our great mistakes, as well as our great triumphs (sometimes the two co-occur).

The worst crime is to try to force a bland and featureless history on others because something offends us. In a democracy, no one is guaranteed a life free from offense, and no one ever should be. It reminds us that there is work still to be done.

though i am opposed to memorials that honor or glorify weapons of warfare, you may find conservators here: http://restorationandbuildingservices.com/ornamental_metalwork_division.html

choose a topic then search under a state....

This would be a great time to look at alternatives. A simple listserv used to be a convenient way to share information among group members, but other simple, free/cheap hosted tools have become available in the last ten years.

In addition to no search, this listserv also . . .

- Does not have a way to keep documents that we can refer to
- Does not have a way to keep pictures that we can refer to
- Does not have a way to set up sub-groups (e..g, by special interest area)
- Does not have a way to create and build a knowledge base that can be used by us or others

In addition, the current arrangement doesn't enable us to easily contribute to the broader regional and national discussion.

As one small example, in May 2008 I posted to Scribd, a widely-used (and free) document publishing/sharing site, the document that someone had compiled that included photos of historic district signs in our state.

http://www.scribd.com/doc/3031803/Historic-District-signs-in-Massachusetts-cities-and-towns

Since then it's been read more than 4,000 times.

This is a perfect example of the potential value of this list serve.
Chris is there an online accessible list of old strings?
Looking for Bronze Statue in my computer, I find a string from 2005 with the following suggestions:
the Stuart Dean company
Dædalus Inc., at 205-3 Arlington St., Watertown, MA 02472;
the principal is Clifford Craine, 1-800-252-0368.
Darius Ferantina
24 Russell Street
Arlington, Massachusetts 02474

Brookline had it's Bronze equestrian statue restored about 10 years ago. A call to its Preservation Commission might get the name of the firm that did it.

Chris and list,

The Town of Randolph has undertaken the refurbishment of its Civil War memorial in front of Stetson Hall, consisting of a pair of putting new granite bases under a pair of bronze civil war howitzers to replace the crubling concrete ones, and to remove the hollow cast bronze civil war soldier statue from its pedestal, repair its bent bayonet, and replace the corroded metal pins that originally held the statue on top of its granite base. What we need are recommendations of conservators or other qualified individuals who can repair the bronze statue while it is off the pedestal, and replace the pins on the seven foot high granite pedestal. Any recommendations would be welcome
