Best course is to undertake a survey of your historical resources, fill out a Form B for all historic properties, and have these available for hearings. Hire a consultant for this work if necessary, PreservationMass has a list of them. This will turn out to be less costly than hiring an historian on a needs basis. Community Development Act funds are available to be used for this purpose.

When there is a question about the historical significance of a building and the Commission members are not comfortable making the determination on their own, we hire a professional architectural historian to write a report. We find this report very helpful in writing our final determination letter and in any discussions with the homeowner.
