Job Title:                  Senior Preservation Planner       
Reports To:              Chiefplanner
Salary:                      $54,097


Job Responsibilities:       

Provides technical staff support toNewton Historical Commission and local
historic district commissions.  Meets with applicants and offers design
advice related to preservation best practices. Reviews applications and
provides recommendations to Commissionsregarding approval.  Drafts
meetingminutes and updates project files. Ensures that completed
projects comply with approved plans.  


Acts as a resource to elected andappointed officials and the general
public regarding historic preservationissues and projects, and advises
Boards and Commissions on such issues in relationto land use and other
regulations.  Preparespreliminary analytical research reports and
guidelines; and makesrecommendations regarding future projects, policy,
regulation, and ordinancechanges.  Educates property owners about
various preservation programs and processes and their implications. 
 
Ensures that City meets its requirementsas a Certified Local Government.
Initiates preservation plans and projects, aswell as contributes to the
historic preservation element of any comprehensiveplanning initiatives.
Drafts for Requests for Eligibility and nominations tothe National Register
of Historic Places. Completes grant applications to fund preservation
projects.  
Education & Job Experience:
Master’s degree from an accreditedgraduate school in historic
preservation, architectural history, or relatedfield; plus three to five years
related experience. 


Successful candidate must be able tomulti-task with varying project
deadlines, possess exceptional interpersonaland problem solving skills,
and be able to determine policy or strategydirections.  Excellent oral and
writtencommunication skills required. Must be able to read and interpret
architecturalplans.  Working knowledge of MicrosoftWord, Excel and
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is extremely desirable.
