[MassHistPres] Materials Question

Hi Jill Fisher,
My question is why wouldn't you choose a rot
resistant wood? Modern 3rd and 4th growth pine with a ring or 2 per in. and
sapwood, variable grained finger-jointed glued up trim with pre-primed camouflage, or inferior wood pressure treated doesn't hold up. However, why not carefully selected old growth pine, cedar (eastern, western red, Alaskan
yellow or Spanish), Cypress, mahogany or other proven varieties. In the Boston
area there are several vendors including J. P . Moriarty that sell
high quality lumber and, better yet, nice lines of restoration moldings
and gutters mostly from Western Red or Spanish Cedar.
Unfortunately many specifiers and builders prefer the easy availability and aggressive product marketing of "replacement" windows, modern plaster products, modern non-durable exterior trim and siding. The early failure rather than longevity of these products is a fact. If the intent is Preservation or Conservation a careful choice of materials helps assure buildings will survive. The materials and skills are available, often at a comparable price. Unfortunately, the choices made by consumers are not apparent for several years.
Thanks,
David Ottinger
