Here's more input on Azek or other pvc material that I think everyone will consider worth remembering. Thank you all for your input it has been most helpful!

I had deleted your question to the masshistpres listserve---the one about the use of Azek—and so couldn’t directly reply. Got to thinking
about it, and I do have some info that you might find of use. While I don’t know if that specific product was used, I can vouch for one aspect of that product type that no one seems to talk about—you HAVE to paint it a light color. Dark colors cause it to
warp all out of shape. My stoop is made of the stuff, as are two balustrades that I designed here in
Troy—all of light color, all doing fine. The stoop is 2 years old, the balustrades are probably 10 or 12 years old. The material was used on a new building for Joseph’s house (our homeless shelter).
It was painted dark green (not my choice). It has been installed for about a year and a half, and it’s twisting all over the place! This is because the dark color causes it to get hot enough to warp.

If light colors are used, I find the material very good to work with. Unless there’s a budget for mahogany or cedar, no pine or other
soft wood available today will last very long at all. Despite whatever anyone else tells you! The trees are simply grown too fast, and have too-open a ring structure, to be of much use in resisting rot.
