Following the efforts of descendent of someone else who was buried in this
same cemetery, and of the historical society, the city has recently
expressed an interest in repairing the marker.  Before they try, we at the
Society would like to recommend an expert that they can hire to do the
repair or at least talk with.

 

 

Background:

 

Our city has long-neglected this cemetery, which is the final resting place
for some of the earliest residents of Marlborough, including the first
pastor, whose marker is the one in the photo. 

 

Ten years ago the city received a detailed report on the specific repairs
that should be made to the cemetery.  it appears that nothing was ever done
with the report.  Certainly nothing was ever done with this marker.  Thanks
to some digging by a concerned descendent (who lives in Vermont), who
connected with a helpful person at the DCR, we found out about this report
and about a state report, "Preservation Guidelines for Municipally-Owned
Historic Burial Grounds and Cemeteries" (Third edition), which we put
online.  And thanks to Shary Berg, who wrote the Marlborough report, we have
been able to put it online, too.

Note: This is also another reminder of the useful information that can be
shared, for free, with others in Massachusetts and elsewhere.  The state
guidelines document has been read more than 1,200 times since I uploaded it
in May of last year.  The credit should go to the people who wrote the
report.  My uploading it required no skill and took about 3 minutes.
