WORKSHOP ON ADMINISTERING DEMOLITION DELAY BYLAWS AND ORDINANCES
The Massachusetts Historical Commission has put together a new workshop for local historical commissions on how best to administer their demolition delay bylaw or ordinance. The development of this workshop follows a high level of interest on this topic as noted on the historic preservation listserve earlier this year. While an MHC demolition delay workshop targeted to communities interested in establishing a demolition delay bylaw has been widely presented statewide in recent years, this new workshop is designed for communities already administering a demolition delay bylaw. This workshop will discuss the strengths and challenges of demolition delay bylaws, how best to effectively utilize the delay period and the necessary sections of a well-crafted bylaw. It will also cover best practices and success stories from around the state. On January 30th, the Cape Cod Commission will host the first presentation of this workshop. Seating is limited. If you would like to attend this workshop, please contact Christopher.Skelly at state.ma.us<mailto:Christopher.Skelly at state.ma.us> to find out if room is still available. If you are interested in hosting a similar regional workshop on this topic in your community, suitable statewide locations will be considered.
LOCAL MOST ENDANGERED HISTORIC PROPERTIES LISTS
Several local historic preservation non-profit organizations have an annual Most Endangered historic properties program. An endangered historic properties program can demonstrate the significance, condition and threats to resources throughout the community. The programs usually require the submittal of a nomination form. When the final list is determined by the non-profit organization, the list is used to build public awareness, broaden local political support and convince owners to consider alternatives to loss, such as rehabilitation. While inclusion on a local most endangered list is limited to advocacy, these lists have been successful in many instances as the links below demonstrate. Most endangered historic property lists are best managed by a local non-profit organization rather than a local historical commission.
