As you may know, an unconference or "barcamp" is a user-generated or self-organizing conference.
History Camp on March 8 in Cambridge will be the first one anywhere dedicated to history.
A quick update:
So far, more than 100 people have registered, including many authors and well-known bloggers, EDs of historic sites and history museums, grad students, teachers, and more.
There are three opportunities for those interested in preservation:
- Share knowledge and encourage action--You're welcome to add your name and topic to the event wiki (www.HistoryCamp.org) if you'd like to present. (There are more than 20 topics proposed so far.) And anyone can attend for free. Registration is at http://historycamp.eventbrite.com.
- Strengthen the history community--One of the hopes of this all-volunteer effort is that we further strengthen the local history community. Historic preservation should be one of the beneficiaries.
- Model a format that can be used for efforts in other communities or regions--If there was a desire to create something focused on preservation that drew widely from throughout the region, a group of volunteers might propose PreservationCamp--or whatever they care to call it.
The list of topics and those attending is at the bottom of the registration page: http://historycamp.eventbrite.com. When the event is over, we'll ask people to post their slides to Slideshare using the tag #HistoryCamp--that's also the hashtag for the event--and we will link those presentations to the event wiki.
