It Could Happen Here:
Is Your Organization Prepared for Disaster?

Gregor Trinkaus‐Randall
Wednesday, January 22, 2014
5:30 pm
Saxe Room, Worcester Public Library, 2 Salem Square, Worcester

This program will include a presentation outlining the elements of a good
disaster preparedness plan, followed by a panel discussion with
representatives of Worcester area organizations that have disaster plans already in
force, who will discuss the ins and outs of planning and plan management.

Following the 2011 tornado in western Massachusetts and Superstorm Sandy in
2012, it became clear, statewide, that many cultural institutions and
organizations had no plan for how to respond to an unexpected disaster. The
unfortunate loss of landmark buildings and irreplaceable museum and library
collections emphasized the value of planning ahead.

It is difficult to imagine that a fire, flood, or hurricane could ever
happen to us, but disaster can strike anywhere – and unexpectedly. Planning
ahead offers quicker access to emergency resources, services, and technical
assistance, which can make the difference between the preservation and loss
of historic buildings, valuable collections, archives, and artifacts.

Speaker Gregor Trinkaus‐Randall, is trained in disaster preparedness and
response. A member of the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners, he
is a specialist in the preservation of library and archival materials. As co
‐chairman of COSTEP MA (Coordinated Statewide Emergency Preparedness in
Massachusetts), he has worked to develop a statewide emergency response
framework for cultural resources in the event of a disaster.

COSTEP MA is a collaborative of representatives of cultural and historical
institutions and agencies, as well as first responder and emergency
management professionals from federal, state, and municipal governments. To learn
more about COSTEP MA and the need for disaster preparedness, see the
