I think many people dislike Boston's brutalist buildings because of what was lost to make room for them. Historians tell us never to forget and for me these structures are a constant reminder of an injustice that not only forced people out of their neighborhoods in the name of progress but took down so many structures with history and character.

Sadly, dislike of the poorly maintained City Hall still runs rampant.

However, Rudolph’s never completed Government Services Center, Boston’s more poetic and less derivative, other great Brutalist masterpiece, is finally getting some attention and sympathetic press.

As for Emily and preservation, she ran a terrific piece on the plight of the Chestnut Hill Pumping Station when it was at its lowest ebb in the ‘90s.

Emily is notorious for her dislike of the Boston City Hall. Let's hope she doesn't make any snide comments about it tonight - her trademark, alas. Let us hope that that particular battle is over.

FYI — Emily Rooney will be taking up the topic of Preservation in Boston (“Boston boasts about its priceless historical landmarks, but is the city doing enough to preserve them?”) on Greater Boston this evening at 7.
