Several years ago, an historic (early 19th c.) house was moved from its original location to make way for an auto dealership to a spot in Arlington Center where it now sits behind a small park (the latter featuring the remnant of the railroad that once connected us to Boston) and is used for offices upstairs and the Cyrus Dallin Museum downstairs. The at-grade basement (due to grade change at the rear, adjacent to a large parking lot) is used for meetings and occasional exhibits. The house is owned and maintained by the Town. This is located at the intersection of Mass. Ave. and Mystic Street if you want to visit.

Subject: [MassHistPres] Uses for Historic Structures

Hi All,

I'm with the Waltham Historical Commission. I'm considering various plans for use of a historic home property owned by the city. I'm wondering specifically if any folks have had success with limited mixed-use, for instance using a second floor as municipal rental space to non-profits, or any other creative uses. The ground floor will be used as historic display space. The grounds are significant and may be used as open space, a la the Longfellow House.

Many thanks for any advice you might have.

All the best,

Alex Green
