Architect, #2016-11441, Boston Landmarks Commission
Brief Job Description:
• Works in the Environment Department under Director of the Boston
Landmarks Commission (BLC) and Director of Design Review as part of the
preservation staff.
• Assists applicants to achieve solutions that comply with regulatory
guidelines & satisfy applicants' needs.
• Provides the preservation commissions and staff with professional review
of proposed and in-process design, construction, and alteration projects
for historic districts and individual Landmarks.
• Serves as professional staff to BLC Design Review Committee advising on
quality & appropriateness of submissions in accord with legislation and
policies.
• Provides guidance at hearings, inter-agency, and public meetings.
• Prepares project review correspondence. Develops design review guidelines
for proposed individual Landmarks and historic districts.
• Conducts Article 85 Demolition Delay reviews.
• Oversees and/or conducts project reviews under state and federal
preservation and environmental regulations and local legislation such as
zoning.
• Participates in outreach activities such as workshops.
• Performs related work as required.
Minimum Entrance Qualifications:
EXPERIENCE: At least 3 years of comparable experience in related areas,
such as historic project design review and/or historic architectural
design. Registered Architect in MA preferred. A Bachelor of Architecture
Degree is strongly preferred and may be substituted for two (2) years of
the required experience. A Master of Architecture Degree may be substituted
for the required experience.
SKILLS REQUIRED: Familiarity with historic building styles, types, designs
and materials. Ability to review plans and proposals to ensure compliance
with applicable guidelines and regulatory mandates. Ability to communicate
architectural and preservation concepts and to work with commissioners,
developers, design and construction professionals, property owners, staff
of the Environment Department. Ability to exercise good judgement and focus
on detail as required by the job. Facility with Microsoft Office Suite and
Adobe Creative Suite. Ability to photograph building conditions. Business
writing skills.
BOSTON RESIDENCY REQUIRED
Nonunion/MO-9 - Salary Range: $61,850.14 to $84,185.38
Hours per week: 35
