The Arlington HDCs put a report in the Town's annual report, listing number
of applications, number of certificates granted or denied, and other
highlights of the year.
We also send out, rather sporadically, a pamphlet to our 300+ properties in
the districts and local real estate brokers. On an annual basis, we wend
postcards to the property owners, reminding them that they need to come to
the respective commission (we have 7 districts) for any exterior changes.

Arlington HDCs

Hello Chris,
Reading Selectmen usually call in the Historical Commission for updates
annually or when an issue surfaces. They assign a member to serve as a
liaison - although the volunteer Selectmen are generally too busy to attend
our meetings, they can serve as a conduit to the Bd. of Selectmen who are
the appointing authority for the Commission. The Commission writes an
annual report.
Commission members also try to be visible at various meetings and keep
contact with the Department head and staff and building dept.. Outreach
includes local Preservation Awards that generate press coverage;
participation at community events such as information booths and as vocal
advocates for preservation.
Good luck - the topic sounds interesting.

Chris,
Since 1991, the Andover Preservation Commission has provided an annual
report to the Town of Andover each year with our list of historic building
reviews including demolition delay, dimensional special permit approvals,
preservation awards, special projects and other accomplishments. The report
is published in Andover's Annual Town Report. We also manage content for an
historic preservation website hosted by Memorial Hall Library.

Does your local commission make a point to meet with the Select Board/City
Council on an annual basis to present what you accomplished in the previous
year and discuss goals for the coming year?
While I know some local commissions do this, I don't have specific names of
commissions. Some specific communities would be great to include in this
public education/outreach workshop. Chris.

Good Morning,
For a workshop next Wednesday at the Central Massachusetts Regional Planning
Commission, I will be discussing public education and outreach efforts for
historic preservation and including some local examples from around the
state. I already have a few examples lined up but could use a few more in my
presentation.
If your commission has a successful public education or outreach effort,
please let me know.
If you are interested in the workshop next week, here is the announcement.

Chris,
Hopkinton has developed an alternative to the formal face to face meeting
with the Select Board where a paid employee is the liaison to them as well
as the town manager. In our case we have Elaine Lazarus, Town Planner, who
assists me in developing the Historical Committee agenda for each month's
meeting and she keeps other town agencies abreast of our activities.
Regarding public outreach, the HHC has just initiated a Facebook page that
we are beginning to populate.
