Painted Wall Preservation, a resource for historic preservationists, is a
nationally recognized, not-for-profit 501c3 organization, dedicated to the
research and preservation of eighteenth and early nineteenth century
American paint-decorated plaster walls in Massachusetts and throughout New
England. Some of PWP's most important work is related to the documentation,
conservation and preservation of scenic landscape murals painted by
Massachusetts native Rufus Porter, a significant American Folk Art artist.
Researchers at CPWP have assisted many homeowners, historical societies and
historical commissions with questions about the preservation and
conservation of in situ scenic landscape murals attributed to Porter's brush
in Massachusetts.
Early American paint-decorated plaster first became known early in the 20th
century, and is still being uncovered in 2017. Recently, a renovation at a
historic home in Middlesex County MA revealed primitive scenic landscape
wall murals in at least two rooms. When authentic paint-decorated plaster
is revealed, there are typically many questions. Who painted the walls?
What is their historical significance? Do they need preservation and
conservation? Should they be restored? PWP researchers are able to assist
and answer these and all other questions.
The next time one of your projects reveals early paint-decorated plaster,
