Historic Preservation for a Better Boston, Lowell Lecture
May 25, 6:30-8:30 p.m., Old South Meeting House, Boston
A number of organizations are hosting a "conversation" about using Boston's
new Community Preservation Act revenue for historic preservation. Up to this
point, I have not heard of any public meetings to gather ideas regarding how
CPA funds might be used in Boston. Preservationists should become engaged
with the CPA: make your ideas heard. The CPA surcharge in Boston is 1% after
deductions, and it could generate over $18 million/year for eligible
projects - historic preservation, conservation/recreation, and affordable
housing. And in the historic preservation category, it's specifically
earmarked for physical investment in historic properties. Funds for such
purposes are hard to come by. Preservationists should start proposing ideas
for preservation in Boston, thinking big!
