[MassHistPres] Wood shingles versus Architectural Asphalt

I question whether the cost of wood shingles is more. My house has had a
wood shingle roof in Western Massachusetts for almost fifty years, and it is
still in good shape with no signs that it will need replacement in the
foreseeable future.

If you were to properly install a wood shingle roof with a good quality
shingle and periodically treat it with a wood preservative as I have, you
should be able to obtain the same life for you shingles. Proper
installation and maintenance are the keys to the roof's longevity.

Subject: [MassHistPres] Wood shingles versus Architectural Asphalt

I am curious as to whether any local historic districts have changed or
modified their stance on shingle roofing. There is a big price differential
and with the architectural asphalt now available, and the longer lifespan of
such a roof, I am wondering if this standard has been modified anywhere.

Thank you,

Kate
