Patti,We haven't encountered this in Arlington, but it sounds interesting. Where wood shakes are appropriate to the house, it seems to me that even a composite version would be much preferable to boring non-original asphalt. As a curious footnote, my Georgian Revival house (1903) originally had wood shakes stained green, which were replaced with slate, presumably by the 2nd owner in or after 1914.John WordenArlington HDC

Subject : RE: [MassHistPres] Information on Enviroshake composite roofing

Hi everyone,

The Salem Historical Commission recently received an application to replace a 3-tab asphalt shingle roof with new Enviroshake composite cedar shake roofing. This is the first time that this product has been proposed in the City’s historic
districts. I was wondering if other Commissions have reviewed this product in historic districts and, if so, was the material found to be appropriate?

Thank you,

Patti
