JOB TITLE Survey Director/Architectural Historian
DEPARTMENT: Historical Commission

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The Survey Director of the Cambridge Historical Commission is an architectural historian who supports the Commission's historic preservation activities. Specific duties include but are not limited to the following:
* Maintain and update the Survey of Architectural History in Cambridge, an inventory of all 13,000 structures in Cambridge, to include new buildings, renovated and demolished structures, and historical materials.
* Support digitization of the Survey by working closely with Commission staff to perfect metadata, evaluate work done by outside consultants, and address concerns and issues as they arise.
* Update National Register of Historic Places listings for Cambridge.
* Advise property owners on historically appropriate exterior paint colors and other matters of architectural history and appropriate alterations.
* Research, write, and edit for internal use and for publication.
* Administer one or more neighborhood conservation districts.
* Serve on various staff committees as assigned
* May perform other related responsibilities/tasks as directed or assigned by the Executive Director.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
* A Master's degree in architectural history, historic preservation, or closely related field with coursework in American architectural history; or a Bachelor's degree in architectural history, historic preservation, or closely related field with coursework in American architectural history, plus at least two years of full-time experience in historic preservation practice including research, writing, or teaching in American architectural history with an historic preservation agency, historical organization, or academic institution.
* Excellent research and writing abilities, a high level of organizational, communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
* Experience with 19th and 20th century exterior color palettes, field techniques for historic color analysis, surface preparation, and application of exterior paint.
* A practical understanding of building fabric and an ability to 'read' historic structures.
* Experience compiling state or local architectural inventory forms and National Register nominations.
* Familiarity with PCs and related software, particularly Microsoft Office and Adobe Photoshop. Ability to assist in maintaining web content and GIS skills are also desirable.
* Proficiency with digital SLR cameras for architectural photography.
* Ability to negotiate obstacles such as staircases and scaffolds and to visit sites throughout Cambridge without assistance.
PREFERRED:
* Valid driver's license preferred.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed primarily in office settings, but outdoor work is required in the photography and inspection of properties and construction sites.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to perform successfully the essential functions of this job. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and various pieces of office equipment, including copy machine, printers, and a folding machine. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.

RATE: $30.43-$42.97 per hour (rate includes 2.5% COLA effective 7/1/18)
