That black material traditionally used in signs is a kind of ground glass called “smalt.”

A few years ago we had a long gilt and smalt sign (seen below) being installed on the rear of our building, facing the green line.

It was made by Bill Walsh uxbridgecarvers.com <http://uxbridgecarvers.com/> 401.467.2500.

Ours is on aluminum because of its size and exposed setting but as you’ll see on his web site he works in wood — which was our original intention.
