Pamela,
Several years ago, I began sending notices to abutters about demolition delay waiver requests before the Salem Historical Commission, although the City's ordinance does not require notification. The letters are sent via regular mail. Meeting notices are also sent to City Councillors. We do not notify neighborhood associations - but this is a great idea and may be one the Commission should adopt. In Salem, demo delay waiver requests are not required to be heard at a public hearing, just at a regular meeting.
Best,
Patti

Subject: [MassHistPres] Notifying Abutters
How do other cities and towns notify the public when demolition delays are scheduled to appear at public hearings? Especially if the house has historical significance to the city. Does the city/town notify the surrounding neighborhood? Do any commissions send out certified letters? Or require the applicant to send out certified letters notifying the abutters of the property about the upcoming hearing?
Any advice or input would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You,
Pamela Lyons
