New England Chapter of the Vernacular Architecture Forum
Annual Meeting, Old Sturbridge Village, Sturbridge, MA
4 April 2020
The New England Chapter of the Vernacular Architecture Forum is pleased to announce the date of its annual meeting to be held on 4 April 2020 in Sturbridge, Massachusetts.
It also invites paper proposals for the meeting—these can be either a 20 to 40-minute presentation with a Q&A or a10-minute works-in-progress presentation, also with Q&A.
Topics preferably should focus upon any aspect of New England vernacular architecture but may touch upon adjacent regions. They may also draw from related fields, including historical archaeology and social history. Papers must feature a significant analytical component rather than be simply descriptive in nature and also have a strong visual component.
SUBMITTING AN ABSTRACT
Applicants should submit a 400-word abstract with a title and contact information (name, address, email address, telephone number); a brief 1-page resume or c.v.; and indicate a preference for a longer session or a works-in-progress presentation. Abstracts should state the paper’s argument, discuss the methodology, lay out scope and content, and specify the relationship to New England vernacular architecture or adjacent regions. Proposals may include up to two images. Please submit proposals to VAFnewengland at gmail.com<mailto:VAFnewengland at gmail.com> by Friday, 3 January 2020.
Submissions will be acknowledged upon receipt, with presenters notified by Friday, 7 February 2020.
Young scholars and emerging professionals, defined as currently enrolled students or professionals no more than five years beyond a terminal degree, are eligible for the Richard E. Greenwood Young Scholar Award. The Greenwood Award was established in 2015 to recognize the contributions of Rick Greenwood, who served as a Director of VAF-NE from 2001 to 2007 and as President from 2012 to 2015. The recipient, in addition to presenting their paper at the VAF-NE Annual meeting, will receive a $250 honorarium.
Applicants who meet the above criteria for the Greenwood Award should indicate on their proposal if they intend to apply for this award if their paper proposal is accepted. Upon notification of acceptance of their paper proposal, the individual must submit their completed paper by 20 March 2020 for consideration for the award, which will be announced at the Annual Meeting.
