Hi Stacia:
I am part of the development team that is restoring and adding to the Virginia Blanchard School on East Hartford Ave. in Uxbridge. The original buildings comprise a school from 1870 with an addition from 1900 onto which we have added a new wing. The building will have 25 apartments for low and moderate income families.
The older structures have tin ceilings and tinwork on the walls in some cases. The tin has been mostly retained/restored along with the original wood floors and walnut wainscoting.
As for the tin, the General Contractor had his personnel remove it so an environmental subcontractor could strip and de-lead the material. The GC then had his personnel reinstall the tin, carefully make necessary repairs where old light fixtures were cut in. That involved filling the voids and other damaged areas, then hand-sculpting the filler material to match the original designs/contours, and then painting.
The GC is Mike Sugrue of Sugrue & Associates out of North Scituate, RI. He can be reached at 401-255-9173 if you or the group that contacted you want more details of the processes involved.

Subject: [MassHistPres] Repairs to Tin Ceiling
I was contacted by a group that is working to restore a nineteenth century structure which has a tin ceiling in an assembly room. Some of the ceiling tiles are rusted or have holes and need to be repaired. In addition to the NPS Brief are there any recommendations on historic preservation best practices for repairing tin ceiling tiles or professionals in the field who can do the work? Thanks in advance for your help.
Wishing you all the best,
Stacia
