Ann,

Take a look at the picture at this link, a friend took the picture in
Brookline of a squirrel while it was eating the lead flashing!

There are a few gray (lead free) alternatives,
- Freedom Gray copper (Revere Copper)
- Roofinox (a tin coated stainless steel that is solderable)

And there's always the old tried and true red copper.
